As reported on ABC news on the 12th [still in archive
on ABCnews.com] the people at Trilogy Studios are
digitally altering movies on DVD in order to censor
them; making them non-violent/sex/bad-language enough
for children to watch. Presumably in the off chance
that you must have your six-year-old watch "Saving
Private Ryan" before they are old enough to appreciate
it. Thankfully, this feature can be turned off from
the rental discs that it is on, but the implications
are pretty clear.
Naturally, the directors of the 120 or so films that
have been altered so far are furious. The artistic
intent of the films is being quashed, they say.
Or, is this, for example, PG-rated version of "The
Matrix", a new and separate work, with "Batman"-like
visual sound effects taking the place of bullet holes
in characters witrhin the film [that's really how
Trilogy altered it]? Basically, is it the same movie,
a "remixed" movie, or a new work altogether?
