argh the name of the festival is 'plunderphonia'. I'm thinking more and
more about the early days of serialism and Schoenberg, deep inside the
establishment and committed to preserving the authority of the composer as
the anarchic pull of atonal composition threatened to invalidate every rule
and tradition of the practice...
The only way to respectably introduce atonal music into composition was to
canonize a set of strict, expressable 'rules'. The author of this set of
rules then introduces himself to history as the 'inventor' of atonal music.
Whereas the simple fact of the matter was, atonal method was zeitgeist,
creeping in everywhere since Wagner (even Beethoven) and exploding
everywhere with jazz. Schoenberg is an important figure and I love Webern
and what I've heard of Berg but I'm not the only one not listening to
Schoenberg's music these days.
I see a lot of parallels between Schoenberg's after-the-fact rule-making
and what Oswald is doing with his goals of making sampling a 'respectable'
compositional practice for composerly composer types.
Kid606's set here in SF last night was a non-stop 30 minute recombinant
collage made entirely out of other people's music. Does he get called
plunderphonic? There's no time... his version of Missy Elliot's 'get ur
freak on' crossed with Black Sabbath and A-ha comes on and my jaw hits the
floor, it's so good...
