I did recordings for YEARS on cheap boom-boxes I borrowed from friends.
I just had a room full of beat-up garage sale tape recorders and a crappy
amp I also borrowed. My best friend was duct tape.

I think what everyone is trying to say is start making the noise first,
and the process of making it will tell you everything about what
equipment you need next, if any.
