Parentheses
I have a new favorite song, "Parentheses," by the Portland band The Blow. alert: that link is to a myspace page. again, let me say one more time, myspace fucking sucks. i've tried firefox and explorer and with both, clicking on the 'lyrics' links for songs doesn't do anything. do i have to use a windoze box just to read the lyrics to my new favorite song? goddammit. would someone else try it and if it works for you, cut and paste the lyrics into a comment here, or email them to me?
"When you're holding me, we make a pair of parentheses" is the key line. what an incredible lyric.

btw, here's what a reviewer at Pitchfork said that I thot was pretty interesting: "There's legitimate beef to be had with The Blow's violent, the-world-is-yours, all-material-out-is-our-material appropriation of other people's shit."
but wait, that's how i feel too! is that really violent? what's violent about claiming the culture you're soaking in as raw material for making new culture? that's what i've been saying for 15 years with my art. lame critics.
You're right, that does blow.
The whole no-lyrics-or-any-sort-of-reaction-not-even-a-friggin-error-message-like-hey-fuckup=use -lame-ass-internet-explorer when you click the lyrics link, not the band.
I guess now nobody can blame me when I get all violent from listening to it.
Why the hell can't people use web standards. I can't remember which browser it was, iCab, I think, that refused to display pages that weren't W3C standards compliant. When only 30% of the pages displayed, and people bitched, they changed it. If I remember right...
i finally got to a windoze box, so here's the lyrics:
SOME PHILOSOPHIES FUEL A BELIEF IN THE SELF, CONSTRUCTED TO KEEP ONE'S GOODS ON ONE'S OWN SHELF. BUILT WELL YOU'RE A STRONG LETTER I, WITH THE FEET ON THE GROUND AND THE HEAD TO THE SKY. NOW AND THEN YOU CAN BEND, IT'S OKAY TO LEAN OVER MY WAY. YOU FEAR THAT YOU CAN'T DO IT ALL, AND YOU'RE RIGHT. EVEN DILIGENT DAY TAKES RELIEF EVERY DAY FROM ITS WORK MAKING LIGHT FROM THE NIGHT.
IF SOMETHING IN THE DELI AISLE MAKES YOU CRY YOU KNOW I'LL PUT MY ARM AROUND YOU AND I'LL WALK YOU OUTSIDE, THROUGH THE SLIDING DOORS, WHY WOULD I MIND?
AND WHEN YOU'RE HOLDING ME WE MAKE A PAIR OF PARENTHESES. THERE'S PLENTY SPACE TO ENCASE WHATEVER WEIRD WAY MY MIND GOES, I KNOW I'LL BE SAFE IN THESE ARMS.
YOU'RE NOT A BABY IF YOU FEEL THE WORLD. ALL OF THE BABIES CAN FEEL THE WORLD. THAT'S WHY THEY CRY.
