Yeah, a friend of mine sent his cd of what I thought was extremely creative 
yet catchy pop music to Thrill Jockey a few years ago. They basically told 
him that if he took what would be the "single" of the cd "and filled the 
rest of the disc with songs like that", then they would talk. (The rest of 
the songs were just as pretty/accessible, just more art-rock than the 
single, which was vh-1 accessible. I was shocked, since I figured the 
difference between indies and major labels was that the indies allowed more 
artistic freedom.

Yeah, when the Beatles first came out, they were marketed very much like 
N'Sync! Part of me thinks it's possible that maybe someday one of those 
groups like N'Sync might start doing wonderfully weird music.
