The sad thing is, that's largely true as far as the content is 
concerned, too. Aside from the nominal difference in the amount of 
money spent on packaging, you have you wonder why your average pop 
musician doesn't just stick to singles and keep up their market 
presence by putting out a good song or two every couple of months. The 
"filler" material the ends up on most albums would generate all kinds 
of goodwill if it were freely available for download from an artist's 
web site, etc., etc.
