I am tempted to think you are on the wrong list (not
specifically from the statement above but from your
general perspective)....
nonetheless, I do agree that the argument here does
need to be more sophisticated than 'bedroom sampler
vs. DA MAN!', but you missed a VERY important point
above.
The important argument really IS whether or not these
artists have even lost any money. The downturn in the
music industry mirrored, almost to the day and
percent, the downturn in the American economy.
Coincidence? doubtful. Not only that, but the
arguments currently being thrown about by most of the
industry mirror EXACTLY the arguments they initially
made against VCRs and Cassette recorders in previous
generations. Can't recall the program at the moment,
but i saw a documentary where they pretty much matched
word for word industry execs lamenting cassette
recorders in the 70s with industry execs lamenting
download culture today- really quite telling
considering that during the decades of adoption of the
cassette and VHS formats in america the industries
actually saw an UPSWING in sales, perhaps because
there was no correlative downturn in the economy at
the time.
I really think there is still quite a big question
mark on whether or not the industry is losing any
money. Then there are a lot of other questions to ask
as to why, besides just online fileswapping (i'd list
a few dozen, but i've been longwinded enough). I think
one should answer that first before moving on to how
much.
cheers from my own McJob.
