Okay, I'll bite. This is an issue that has troubled us (Public Works a.k.a.
The Tape-beatles) ever since we started doing our work. In fact, it has
been often a somewhat divisive issue for us, since some of our membership
prefer "behind the scenes" type of activities, while others of us are more
extroverted.
The approach that we've settled on -- and some of the reason for it is
simple laziness coupled with a lack of time -- is to play "canned" music
and show films over the top of it. This makes it sound more boring than it
actually is, because the films are very carefully constructed to synch with
the music at all key points, and build on and expand the issues presented
in the music, rather than simply illustrating them.
I'd be the first to admit that our approach is not perfect. Although
audiences seem to appreciate what we present, it's definitely not like
attending a "concert." We prefer to think of it as "expanded cinema." We
control film reels and loops live and in the background; we have live cues
we have to mark, and so there is a chance of "failure" and the audiences
senses this and so it is more than just watching a movie; it has some of
the tension of a "performance."
But in some ways we are recognizing the shortcomings of this approach and
would like to move on, but there are only so many hours in the day,
especially when you have jobs, etc.
In any event, the next performance will be different and I am sure that
this thread will inform it in some way.
