As to legal troubles it was pretty much a parody of the actual book ... so
I bet it would be okay. Which is not to say that some enterprising
publisher wouldn't sue just for the hell of it, to try to push the law
further in that direction.
As to whether it's "fun" or good or whatever -- it's not that good, I
thought. If you're a HUGE LOTR fan you will read it just to tickle your
completist fancies. But it's very much a product of the 60s and what the
60s thought was funny. So it hasn't worn all that well with time. Of
course, some things are funny, but over-all it is itself a little boring.
Too self-referential. I think it was probably a lot more fun to write
than it was to read.
