Yeah, I had this problem while trying to lift video samples from the
film "The Loved One" for my song "Spaceage". The same protection is
built into both of my Sony digital camcorders. Luckily, the samples only
needed to be a few seconds in length, and it takes a few seconds of
being in Record mode before the security kicks in. As a workaround, I
forwarded the VCR to just before the sample material and managed to get
what I needed before the camcorder would shut down.
I agree that it's disheartening to see theses restrictions pop up.
