On a less sample-based note (pun), there was P.O.D. ("Perceptual Outer
Dimensions" or something, not the metal-alternative rockers) that converted
the signals from space into MIDI data. It also was ambient, but I'm not
sure exactly where from came the source data.

I've been sampling from the NASA channel alot lately - the spacewalks are
good stuff: "<CRACKLE, HISS> It's a great day for a spacewalk.<HISS,
CRACKLE>"

Would the NASA -- and C-SPAN for that matter -- broadcasts be public
domain?

Lustmord did a project similar to this in the early 90's... called
Arecibo -- Trans-Plutonian Transmissions. It's a slab of nice cold
ambience.
