Herbert's contract with himself makes one thing clearer to my
mind than ever before: sampling is not a synonym for recycling.
it's been easy to use "sample-based composition" and "recycled
culture" interchangeably, but that's a false equality. you can
sample your own farts or crumpling a paper cup, but that's not
appropriation, and it doesnt carry the same cultural weight as
appropriation. Furthermore, Herbert's obsession with
"originality" is rather laughable, to be sure.
having said that, it's great to read a manifesto, even if you
don't agree with it. at least he's thinking, which is more than
can be said of lots of practioners in "the field."
