He was supported by the ACLU, which took a while to find him
some legal help but eventually got a firm here in San
Francisco to do it, pro bono. They apparently are one of the
best IP law firms in the country. Additionally, the EFF has
agreed to represent me in the event that Detritus.net is
included in the suit (for hosting Tom's site).

(of course all Tom's other expenses like flying to various
court dates and such, came out of his pocket, so this thing
was not free, for sure (he lives in Utah but the case was
filed in L.A. I think, and the deposition was in San
Francisco))

Btw, the thing that really impressed me about the lawyers at
the EFF is that they really truly want to do good and they
actually welcome cases like this as great opportunities to
improve things. When I first met with them and told them
about Detritus, they said, "so it looks like your site is a
potential source of many interesting cases!" I'm really
happy to be working with them.
