i really doubt it already is even a front end. once the data
is in a real database it's so easy to have much better
functionality than what they have on their site. (the
prelinger movie archive). why just dump it out as a flat
list?
anyway what i'm thinking of (and Taylor's point about
lack of funds is well-taken) would be a true relational
database schema with an interface functionality like
IMDB.org (Internet Movie Database). (Imagine if there were
no copyright and the IMDB included free broadcast-quality
clips of everthing!!)
This may seem like ridiculous overkill now, you may be
satisfied with Command-F now, with only a few hundred films
online. but this thing hopefully will be around and will
keep growing for years. what happens when there are
thousands of items?
Imagine if you could search and sort by: subject, time
period, director, actors, "plot", characters, film stock,
length, type of shot (tracking, panning, etc), date and
place of first screening... the list could go on and on.
then you could have cross-reference links like in IMDB. you
search for irish setter and you find a film that also has a
cocker spaniel. "hmm, i wonder what other films have cocker
spaniels, and let's display those by reverse chronological
order". click. done.
ah well. keep dreaming, steev.
but seriously, people - we are deluged with information more
and more. it will only get worse. the people who lead us
through the flood in the most efficient manner will be our
heroes. the curators and the database architects and the
interface designers.....
