From: Vicki Bennett (peoplelikeusATmistral.co.uk)
Date: Sun Mar 11 2001 - 18:47:25 PST

THE STREAMING LOUNGE : 7.30PM - 9.30PM (GMT) : Friday 16th March

People Like Us, Hull Time Based Arts and Detritus take great pride
and delight in announcing The Streaming Lounge - the broadcast of two
simultaneous audio streams of live sound collage performance.

Hope you can join us this Friday for an audience participation
webstream. two streams: one from PLU in the UK and one from Detritus
in the US. The streams will be feeding from each other and we hope
that you will feed from us and respond in the following ways:

You will have the opportunity to phone in with your recordings,
upload mp3s, post up jpegs of you listening to the show (with your
favourite beverage please!), to spew mess in the chat room (which
will be projected onto the wall of the Streaming Lounge in Hull) and
watch a very blurry looking webcam shot of some strangers moving very
fast very slowly. If you live in the north of England then maybe you
would like to come along to the event AT Time Based Arts, 42 High
Street, in Hull's picturesque Old Town, from 7.30pm for a couple of
hours with free Yorkshire Tea!

Below are the details for participation and listening.

People Like Us stream (including, by Friday - chatroom, webcam):

PLU AND MATMOS SPLIT 12"

Wicked Witch Records http://www.wickedwitchrecords.com is pleased to
announce a split twelve inch by People Like Us and Matmos. Having
both applied cut-up sampling techniques to country and western
subject matter (Matmos on "The West" and, more recently, People Like
Us on their latest album "A Fistful of Knuckles"), plans were hatched
for a collaborative live performance in which each group would
perform the other's songs. As rumours of the "campfire" theme
circulated, nervous club owners, fearing property damage, all backed
out. But the idea of a split project seemed too good to resist, and
so a split record of campfire cut-ups, scratched vinyl square dance
calls and defective banjo solos was born. People Like Us'
"Home-Roam-Play" compresses the sampled riffs, stuttering vocal tics,
and twangy country n western snippets from A Fistful of Knuckles into
a Jive Bunny "Megamix" that gallops relentlessly across the entire
album's terrain of sunlit ranches and crazed yodel-fests. Across its
six minutes, Vicki Bennett's exquisite sense of comic timing never
dips into a repetitive rut, instead staggering the Tourette's
syndrome singalongs and turntable shootouts with some surprisingly
tranquil acoustic guitar-based comedowns. On "Work-All-Day", Matmos
see and raise the preponderance of mangled clichZs from the Olde
West with a few stereotyped musical representations of the "exotic"
East for good measure. Halfway through the chirpily cut-up
proceedings, a starkly isolated voice attempts and fails to sing
"Home on the Range", its cozy nostalgia now undercut by spiky gaps
and unheimlich gasps.
