To be honest, I don't think that it's really fair to say that they *are*
entirely separate ideas. One of the most useful discussions that I've ever
had with members of my own family about came out of my kid sister asking me
to copy a CD for her, and her getting angry over the fact that I wasn't
willing to do it even though I throw together mixes for friends all the
time. It was that notion of only taking small bits, and of using them in a
different context than that in which they are originally or commercially
encountered, that they hadn't considered before, and even if the stated
goal of foisting mix tapes off on people is just to sell a couple of CDs by
deserving musicians, at least the idea that parts aren't the same as a
whole can come out of it.
