Sorry it took so long to repost. I had to find some news on what had
happened exactly since I'm too scatterbrained to remember. Turns out it
happened nearly 2 years ago. February, 1999 is when I read about it. I have
some links to stories here, from the source I got them from.

Basically, what happened was that they added a number on their Pentium
III chips that could possibly identify users on the net and track whatever
information that people so desired. The hoi polloi cried foul and Intel soon
changed their story and buried the number in the hardware with "off" being
default. Needless to say, I am thinking that if this story is brought out to
the public more, the same thing will happen. It'll be built but never
emplimented.
If anyone else remembers the situation more correctly or technically
(two years, wow. didn't think it was that long ago), feel free to append or
correct me. This is just what I vaguely remember.
