Although tangential, I thought I'd mention another bit of bad news for
our side: The NAB, which is the major lobbying group for mainstream formula
radio conglomerates, has talked "our" government into restricting the
allowances for low powered FM broadcasting. This was going to allow about
800 new radio stations across the US to start broadcasting on low wattages,
and this would have produced a lot more diverse/fringe programming on your
local radio dial. With the new restrictions, only about 80 radio stations
might get on the air now, and most will likely be outside of major
listening areas.
A colleague who I was working with towards starting a low-powered FM
station locally responded to the news with a five byte email: "Fuck."
