PRESS RELEASE October 2000
Burning Bush
Live One-day Event Showcasing
Time-based Art Works
Saturday 11 November, 12 noon to 10.00pm
DCA and Cooper Gallery, DJCAD
DCA and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design will host a one-day
series of one-off time-based art works on Saturday 11 November. The
galleries at both venues will be filled with various live projects.
Challenging the way we make and consume art, the works will also explore
the relationship between art and technology. There will be a rapid change
over of events, all integrating process in situ.
The works have been selected by Mike Stubbs who is a Senior Research
Resident at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of
Dundee working as a film-maker/ artist. As Director of Hull Time Based
Arts he commissioned over 250 artists for public exposition, established
the Root Festival and has developed and managed a new Media Centre for
Hull, TimeBase, as part of Hull's cultural quarter development.
Many of the works included in this series are being premiered in Scotland
and will include the following artists:
Julien Maire - This French artist will present a projection-performance of
fascinating micro machines, shown through an adapted slide-projector.
Julien will also present his latest performances, two very short and
complex simulations: 'Face Up' a surprising slow motion experience and 'The
Imponderable', a construction of fire...
Automated Noise Ensemble - Bow: A continuous bow is constructed one foot
from the walls of the gallery space. Two identical twin-stringed
instruments, with contact microphones built into the body, are played by
two performers, Rob Gawthrop and Bob Levine, simultaneously walking them
round the 'bow'. This, a durational piece, with the performers walking at
a regular, steady, slow pace. The sound quality is high pitched and
creates a disjunction between what you see and what you hear.
People Like Us - Vicki Bennet has a unique plunderphonic styling - dadaist
samplings and reshuffling of cultural oddities from discarded LPs are
recurrent themes, as is the use of intercepted radio broadcasts gutted and
retextualised.
Jim Brouwer and Alex Pervertt - 3D computer generated geometrical shapes
will be conducted by the digital sound processes, with the outcome,
synchronized choreography between audio and dimensional space.
Forum - Are Live Art Festivals Dead or Alive?
Some of the participants and other potential partners in a future live art
festival will be invited to contribute to a 2 hour forum to discuss the
potential for a Dundee live art festival and to re-examine the key concepts
of live art.
All events are free and open to the public.
Burning Bush is a collaboration between the Cooper Gallery, School of
Television and Imaging, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and
