Actually, I don't imagine that they would be selling at all at chain stores.
The employees would probably freak out at the fact that it doesn't scan, ask
their managers, and the managers would refuse to sell it, because there
would be no way to keep track of their stock. I worked at a chain record
store (Best Buy) a couple of years ago, and that was how they handled CD's
that didn't have scanner codes or some form of stock-keeping unit.
Maybe if the store personnel were able to figure out that it was a joke
somehow, it would increase the possibility of the discs actually leaving the
stores. Were these placed on the shelves in those little anti-theft
containers?
Another thought, if these CD's were being placed in the same bins as music
from the artists you're sampling, you could get in trouble with the record
labels and their lawyers, even if the disc is free. You'd be competing with
the labels' sales. It could be argued that somebody might decide to take
your free CD of Ricky Martin samples instead of a Ricky Martin CD. Even if
that's on a small scale, that's what makes the labels bare their teeth. I
hope you didn't provide any contact information that can be traced to you if
that's the case. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great idea except for
the concern above, but there's also the capacity to get caught.

I thought about making a series of anonymous pluderphonia tapes once and
stowing them in all sorts of nooks and crannies around SF. I never got
around to finishing recordings I was happy with though.
