AC/DC Deny Beasties Right To Sample
The Beastie Boys, known for fighting for their right to party, recently had
to fight -- unsuccessfully -- for their right to use an AC/DC sample on
their recently-released compilation, The Sounds Of Science. That's why fans
won't find the track "Rock Hard," the trio's first Def Jam single, which
cribs from "Back In Black," on the compilation, the band told the NME. "We
originally had [the song] on there because it was never widely available,"
explained Mike D. "So we had to go back to AC/DC for sample clearance." The
band's lawyer refused the request, so Mike D took matters into his own hands
and called the band while they were in a Vancouver studio. Angus Young's
brother Malcolm also refused. Mike D said: "He goes, 'I'd love to do it for
you guys, but it's...one of the top three songs we've ever written!
Whatever. AC/DC could not get with the sample concept. They were just like,
nothing against you guys, but we just don't endorse sampling."
