Are they saying that the record companies would rather people not
understand the lyrics, or would it be acceptable to have a lyrics server if
all the lyrics were incorrect? If they weren't the propper lyrics then the
record companies could not claim that the lyrics are copyrighted.

Yes, crazy. Can someone explain how the record companies LOSE money when
"their" lyrics are published? Lyrics don't replace the whole work/music.
