Almost Enough to Make One Swear Off Caipirinhas

A Saatchi ad campaign for a Brazilian liquor company has been spray-painting stencils of the Rio de Janiero Jesus statue, dressed in t-shirt and bluejeans, around London. Real street artists are angry and are fighting back. London hipsters aren't sure what to think.

Thought Thieves Film Festival Counters Microsoft's

THOUGHT THIEVE$ is a short film showcase about corporate appropriation of knowledge, culture, and creativity. It is a grassroots response to the Micro$oft short film competition of the same name.

This version of THOUGHT THIEVE$ is about big companies stealing and profiting from the knowledge commons. Think about it: how would you feel if you saw your cultural traditions, collective creativity, thousands-year-old seed strains, indigenous medicinal knowledge, or even your very genetic code being passed off as the property of some multinational corporation? What would you do?

More about Archives

detritus.net-unthrottled-archive.png
You can see from the spike in bandwidth on the graph above that when I lifted the throttle for the Detritus archives, as announced in the previous entry, bandwidth usage went up by a factor of 4. And it swamped out the server by 2pm pacific time (about 2 hours ago). The current theory: there's a lot of people who still think certain plunderphonics files are by James Brown, Beatles, and Michael Jackson. And in a way they are, but... I don't think these are what they want.

Or... someone saw the announcement and posted it to a popular place that I can't locate yet. It seems like a lot of browsers don't send referrer headers anymore, so it's much harder to figure out where hits are coming from. blargh.

Anyway, you may not get the smooth downloading that was promised, we're still struggling with a nice configuration. thanx for your patience.

Material in the Detritus Archive Being Discontinued Soon

We're discontinuing a bunch of the audio stuff in the Detritus archive. A lot of
it is available elswhere now, or else we figure just about everyone who wants it
has downloaded it already, plus we're switching to a new hosting situation where
diskspace will be more dear. So if you haven't got it yet, go for it. I've raised
the bandwidth throttle really really high so it should be easy. In august this
stuff will go away: plunderphonic, U2 Negativland, KLF, and probably the
Mystery Tapes.
